Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is the ninth national park in Nepal and is located in the country’s mid-hills on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu Valley and named after Shivapuri Peak of 2,732 m (8,963 ft) altitude. It covers an area of 159 km2 (61 sq mi) in the districts of Kathmandu, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk, adjoining 23 Village Development Committees. In the west, the protected area extends to the Dhading District. Shivapuri is the second highest peak among the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley. It is 2732m at its peak with numerous sharp ridges radiating to all sides. Shivapuri was proclaimed as a watershed area supplying more than a million liters of natural spring water to the city.

HistoryEdit

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is the ninth national park in Nepal and was established in 2002. After Shivapuri experienced several problems concerning soil erosion as a result of deforestation, over- grazing, cultivation on steep slopes etc.; reducing the quality and quantity of the water supplied, His Majesty’s Govt. of Nepal initiated a program to protect Shivapuri and its adjoining areas as a watershed and wildlife reserve in 1975. As recently as, in mid 2002 Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve was officially given a National Park status.
