Shima is a city located in Mie Prefecture, on the island of Honshu, Japan. The city was formed on October 1, 2004, by the merger of all five towns (Ago, Dai, Hamajima, Isobe and the former town of Shima) from Shima District, which was dissolved by the merger. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 56,758 and the density of 316 persons per Square kilometer. The total area is 179.67 Square kilometers. This city has two bays, Matoya Bay and Ago Bay. Matoya Bay is famous for oyster cultivation and Ago Bay is famous for pearl cultivation. Both of them are sightseeing spots and Shima is in Ise-Shima National Park.
