Sheshnag Lake, a mountain lake, is located at a distance of 27 km from Pahalgam. Perched at an altitude of about 3,658 m above sea level, it takes a two day hiking from Pahalgam to reach this lake. The water of this greenish blue lake is covered with ice till the month of June. The lake has derived its name from its seven peaks. Each of the seven peaks resembles the heads of a mythical snake. According to the legend, Sheshnag Lake is situated at the same place where Lord Shiva left his snake on his way to Amarnath Cave. During the months of summer, which is also the peak time to visit the Amarnath Cave, large numbers of tourists do camping at the lake side.

Taxi : N.A
BUS : Jammu and Srinagar are connected through road transport. Buses and Taxis are also available from both places to entry point to Amarnath trek to holy caves. The entry point is 363 km away from Jammu through Pahalgam. From Pahalgam, it is about 50 km to reach the Amarnath holy caves entry points.
Train : Amarnath does not have its own railway station. Jammu is the nearest Railway Station. It is connected with all major railway stations in India.
Air : The Nearest airport is Srinagar. There are daily flights to Delhi and Jammu from Srinagar. On some days, special flights are offered from Chandigarh and Amritsar to Srinagar. Nearest International Airport is Delhi. Helicopter services are also available from The pick up point is Baltal and it takes one fro the pooja and darshan at Amarnath which takes almost an hour and brings back the pilgrim to Baltal. Helicopters can be takes from Pahalgam as well. However, the helicopter lands at Panchtarni, which is 2 km from Amarnath and from there tourists need to trek or take ponies to reach the temple.

Things to CarryEdit
- Carry needful cloths, food products and shoes.
- Amarnath holy cave is situated at very high mountains and there are blowing very cold winds. So during the Yatra, take woollen clothes, shoes, Small umbrella for face,
- Raincoat, Monkey cap, torch, stick, gloves and jacket. The temperature may be down even up to -5c.
- Keep a slip in your pocket with your name, address.
- Take drinking water bottle, dry fruits and biscuit.
- Keep one packet of Vaseline in your bag for safety your skin from cold winds.
- Keep your all clothes in plastic bag not cloth bag.
- Carry some medicines such as banded and glucose. This kind of medicines may be useful on the way.
- Best dress advice for Ladies; please don’t wear saree for the yatra. It may be uncomfortable. Use comfortable dress such as paint, salwar kameej, and suit.
- Use hunter shoes, it will be very comfortable in yatra.
