Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, this West African country of Senegal is hot, humid and tropical. Home to over 14 million people, Senegalese landscape generally consists of rolling sandy plains rising to Sahel foothills within the southeast. Predominantly Islamic, Senegal is also home to Christians making up to almost 10 percent of the national population. Featuring a musical heritage based on percussion instruments, Senegal is better known for this fact than most other African countries.
Home to several ports, harbors, interesting islands and natural reserves, Senegal topography is well watered by the Gambia River, Casamance Rivers and Senegal River marking as the north-side boundary of this country. Dakar, which became the capital city of independent Senegal in 1960, now serves as an important and convenient international entry point for tourists wanting to explore Senegal, and its exquisite wildlife.
