Semonkong, means the ‘Place of Smoke’, is a small village town, located at the heart of the Maloti, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lesotho. Established in the 1880s, this small town was an important refuge spot for the people of Basotho after the Gun War. The Thaba Putsoa Mountains adds to the beauty of this place, and the varied flora and fauna of this region provides exceptional scenic and tourism value to this small village.
Semonkong is termed as a natural paradise and offer tourist two enchanting waterfalls. A 200m high waterfall, Maletsunyane is one of the most fascinating waters among the duo and with its white foamy water, enhances the beauty of the surroundings. Another 120m high waterfall, the Ketane Falls is also equally charming with amazing natural beauty. Outdoor activities like pony trekking, hiking and trout fishing are widely done by the tourist at Semonkong.
