The castle was built in the middle of the 12th century. It was first owned by the Count von Lechsgemünde and then by the Archbishopric of Salzburg for almost 600 years. In this period the possession was administered by the count of the castle. During the Napoleonic wars the castle was first owned by Carinthia, then Salzburg, French Illyrien, Bavaria and Tirol. At the end it was in the ownership of Tirol.
