Detail InformationEdit

The Sázava monastery was founded in 1032 by Prince Ulrich and his first abbot was the hermit Procope, later one of the Czech saints, who was officiating divine service in the Slavic language. The monastery soon became the important early medieval centre of Slavic culture and literature. In 1097 the use of Slavic language during divine services was prohibited and the Benedictines of Břevnov took over the monastery and introduced Latin liturgy here.
The monastery went through several reconstructions, but the main Church was never completed and its construction was interrupted in the early 15th century during the Hussite wars. At that time the monastery was burnt down and the monks were expelled. The grand torso of the Church of St. Procope, the abbot chapel, the Gothic crypt and a part of the chapter preserved from the Gothic period. In the 17th century the monastery was rebuilt in the Baroque style, in 1785 it was abolished by the Josephine reforms. It was sold to a private person in auction and in the 19th century it was rebuilt into a Pseudo-Renaissance chateau. The exposition of the “Old-Slavic Sázava” has been established in the monastery recently.
