Sawantwadi Palace was constructed by the earliest ruling family of Maharashtra, the Khem Sawants. The palace is believed to have been constructed between 1755 and 1803. The Lester Gate, constructed in 1895, is the entrance of the royal palace. The palace is entirely built using laterite stone and comprises residential areas, a darbar hall and an administrative hall. This palace holds displays of a vast collection of traditional lacquerware and artefacts. The set of furniture, board games, little dolls and paintings are also displayed in the museum. The walls of the palace are adorned with chitkaris. Paintings, wooden and clay artefacts and jewellery belonging to the Sawantwadi royal family, are exhibited in the palace. The Ganjifa Art, lacer work and woodwork paintings dating back to the 18th century are exhibited at the museum. The palace also organises training sessions and workshops for artisans.
