Built over a chain of islands spread within a number of large lakes, Savonlinna is home to several fascinating museums, art galleries and specialty boutiques offering a unique shopping experience. With plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars gladly accommodating scores of visitors, this Finnish town is a delightful break where guests can relax by the lakeside terrace bars listening to some of the best live music.
Situated within the heart of the Saimaa Lakeland, the southeastern Finnish town of Savonlinna was originally founded in 1639 around the historically famous Olavinlinna Castle. At a distance of 335 kilometers from Helsinki, this tourist town is literally jam-packed throughout July, when it plays host to the international Savonlinna Opera Festival. On either side of this renowned music extravaganza, this major junction on the Saimaa route is a fun-filled cultural hub, featuring an extremely beautiful lake-scenery, alongside numerous small uncluttered beaches.
