Saugerties may be a city in Ulster County, New York, USA. The city of Saugerties contains the Village of Saugerties within the northeast corner of Ulster County. U.S. Route 9W and the big apple State Route thirty two submit to the city, convergency at the middle of the village and overlapping to the south. These routes parallel the the big apple State pike (Interstate 87), that passes through the city simply west of the village.
The village land of Saugerties was obtained from Esopus Indian Kaelcop, chief of the Amorgarickakan tribe. Governor Andros purchased the land on Gregorian calendar month twenty seven, 1677, for the value of a bit of fabric, a blanket, some coarse fiber, a loaf of bread, and a shirt. The village was incorporated in 1831 as “Ulster,” and adjusted its name to “Saugerties” in 1855.
