Sat Tal or Sattal is a group of seven freshwater lakes in the Lower Himalayan Range. The place is situated at an altitude of 1370 metres above mean sea level amidst dense forests of oak and pine trees. The seven lakes of Sattal are Panna or Garud Tal, Nal-Damyanti Tal, Purna Tal, Sita Tal, Ram Tal, Laxman Tal and the Sukha Tal or Khurdariya Tal. Sat Tal was formed as a result of tectonic activities and the lifted sediments between the Tibetan plain and the Indo-Gangetic plains. Sat Tal is an ideal place for adventures and excursions. It is the perfect place for mountain biking, rock climbing, angling, rafting, rappelling, bird watching, boating and swimming. The lake has a varied flora and fauna. The flora consists of a diverse range of plants like, ferns, lichens, fungi and medicinal herbs and shrubs. Sat Tal is a shelter for several migratory and resident birds. It has five hundred species of resident and migratory birds, twenty species of mammals and over five hundred and twenth five species of butterflies. Some of the bird species visiting the lake are Blue-throated and Brown-headed Barbets, Lineated Barbet, Golden-throated Barbet, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, Common Flameback Woodpecker, Black-headed jay, Black-lored, Black-throated tits, Black bulbul, Ashy-throated warblers, Black-chinned babbler among the many.
