Consisting of two islands located 140 kilometers apart, Sao Tome & Principe are located off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa, within the Gulf of Guinea. These uninhabited islands were originally discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century. Home to a large amount of endemic birds and plants, Sao Tome & Principe are important marine turtle nesting sites, especially the hawksbill turtle species.
Displaying a tropical – hot and humid climate which generally aids the cultivation of sugarcane, coffee and cocoa, Sao Tome & Principe government have lately taken steps to expand the touristic facilities available here. Moreover, substantial discoveries of petroleum within its territorial waters are expected to boost the poor island economy. Served through weekly flights to/from Lisbon, Luanda, Libreville and Cape Verde, Sao Tome & Principe offers several affordable hiking, diving, fishing and boat tour opportunities for visitors.
