Santiago , also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile, and the center of its largest conurbation (Greater Santiago). It is located in the country’s central valley, at an elevation of 520 m above mean sea level. The city lies in the center of the Santiago Basin, a large bowl-shaped valley consisting of a broad and fertile lands surrounded by mountains.Santiago is Chile’s major industrial and agricultural region. The bulk of Chile’s industrial and commercial activity is concentrated in the national and regional capital of Santiago.Santiago is served by Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport.
Despite its long history, there are only a few historical buildings from the Spanish colonial period left in the city, because Santiago – as the rest of the country – is regularly hit by earthquakes. The buildings from this period include the Casa Colorada (1769), the Church San Francisco (1586) and Posada del Corregidor (1750). The Cathedral on the central square (Plaza de Armas) is a sight that ranks as high as the Palacio de la Moneda, the Presidential Palace.
There is an extensive network of bicycle trails in the city, especially in the Providencia comuna. The city’s main parks are:
San Cristóbal Hill , O’Higgins Park and Santa Lucía Hill.
