The Salinas Grandes is a salt desert in the Córdoba and Santiago del Estero provinces of the Sierras de Córdoba in Argentina. It covers an area of 3,200 mi² (8,290 km²).It is of industrial importance for its sodium and potassium mines. Recently the salt flats have been explored for the lithium brine beneath its salt. Recent analysis of core samples place the concentration of Lithium at up to 1,600 ppm. By comparison the average concentration worldwide is 1,100ppm. More significantly, Bolivas Salar de Uyuni is also located in the same region and is estimated to contain up to 80% of the World’s lithium deposits.
