Salem /ˈseɪləm/ is that the capital of the U.S. State of Oregon, and therefore the county courthouse of Marion County. It’s placed within the center of the Willamette vale aboard the Willamette River, that runs north through town. The stream forms the boundary between Marion and President of the United States counties, and therefore the town neighborhood of West Salem is in President of the United States County. Salem was based in 1842, became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851, and was incorporated in 1857. Salem had a population of 154,637 at the 2010 census, creating it the third largest town within the state once Portland and Eugene. Salem is a smaller amount than associate degree hour driving distance aloof from Portland.
