The capital of the southern Zufar and Dhofar regions of Oman, Salalah is the second largest city in the country which is historically well known and famous for its frankincense trade. This coastal city is the birthplace of the Sultan Qaboos bin Said, though he now lives in Muscat ever since he ascended to the throne in 1970. This ‘Perfume Capital of Arabia’ is a favorite tourist destination due to the natural beauty of the nearby mountains withholding an abundance of frankincense trees lining the wadi-courses. Lush and green during monsoons, Salalah supports large herds of cattle and other livestock.
Showcasing numerous beautiful beaches and excellent scuba diving sites along the coastline, Salalah is also reputed for bird watching opportunities. Boasting of historic ruins and the Sumharam fortified town, this city of antiquity was a very important port in the historic past. Presently, an important transshipment hub for containers within the area, Salalah City, home to a free-zone is fast emerging as a major heavy-industrial center of the Middle East.
