Detail InformationEdit

The Baptismal Church on Mattig was dedicated to Saint Vitus and stood on the site of today´s Mullner Garden. In the year 1143, the Bishop of Passau left the territory of the Kirchberg parish, comprising our village, to the Mattsee Monastery.
Within the course of church reformations under the reign of Emperor Josef II, the Veit Chapel was pulled down in the year 1787 for its state of severe dilapidation. The Parish Church in late Gothic style you see today probably was erected by the then Castle proprietors around 1500, soon after the new Moated Castle on Mattig was completed.
The present ring of three bells were cast in 1951 as the former ones were destroyed during World War I and II. The original death bell still today used dates back to the year 1793. The high altar was founded in 1674 by the then Castle owner Wolf Heinrich of Vieregg and installed in 1693. The original 1886 Organ was renovated in 1921 and substituted for a new one in 1988.
Among the most noticeable and striking features of the Church is the lavish Christmas Crèche that was created partly in the year 1730 and partly between 1830 and 1860. One can admire 144 elaborate figurines depicting 15 different biblical scenes.
