Rupnagar is a town that is located in the Rupnagar district of the state of Punjab. The town was previously called as Ropar and was founded around the 11th century by a Raja called Rokeshar. The town’s main claim to fame is that it is located in the site of the Indus Valley Civilization. The Bhakra Dam is located nearby in a place called Nangal. The surrounding areas of the town have been the site of six main civilizations and there are many archeological sites that are located in this region. Many shards of pottery and terracotta items, bones, arrowheads and other items have been found in the region. The Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara is an important religious site and is considered to be one of the main centers of the Sikh religion. The place is one of the five sacred seats of the Sikh religion. There are two other gurudwaras that are located in the town as well and these are the Guruwara Parivar Vichora Sahib and the Gurudwara Batta Sahib. The latter is situated in a village on the outskirts of the place and this is a place that is well worth the visit. The people here are very friendly and travelling around is thus a pleasant affair.

How to ReachEdit
By Air : The closest airport is located at Chandigarh and this is situated around 50 km from the city. Chandigarh airport is domestic airport that has good connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur. On arrival one can opt for a taxi from the airport to the city of Rupnagar. This facilitates easy carrying of luggage and the one hour ride is also comfortable. Taxis cost around Rs 700 for the trip.
By Train : The Rupnagar station is connected to certain places such as Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. Tickets from Delhi to Rupnagar cost around Rs 145 and this is clearly one of the most suitable options. However tickets have to be booked well in advance in order to be assured of reservation.
By Bus : Buses are among the most used modes of transport to reach the place. Government buses connect most of the nearby cities to the city. Tickets from Chandigarh cost around Rs 75 for the trip. Private buses are more expensive and prices differ according to the operator. Private buses are much more comfortable and some operators have A/C buses as well.
