The Royal Palace was built by King Norodom at the time when the capital city of Cambodia was on the verge of being shifted to Phnom Penh. The entire building was finished and completed before World War I. Thai architects, designers and French administrators had assisted King Norodom in the making of this complex. Eventually this complex comprising of three main buildings called the Silver Pagoda, Khemarin Palace and the Throne Hall were also used by the subsequent Kings ruling over Cambodia.
The Throne Hall was always considered to be the Sacred Seat of Judgment. The responsibilities and duties of the kings were carried on here by the officials, generals and confidants from this place. Silver Pagoda is the important part of the Royal Palace containing many statues of Lord Buddha. The Khemarin Palace was used by the Kings as their home. The Chan Chhaya Pavilion, which is also known as the Moonlight Pavilion is largely visited by tourists and local residents for seeing the Khmer Classical dances nowadays.
