Basically a port which is the largest in Europe, Rotterdam is the second largest urban settlement in Netherlands. Located along the North Sea in the western regions of the country, Rotterdam was the largest port in the World from 1962 to 2004, until it was superseded by the Shanghai Port in China. Strategically located near the mouth of the Nieuwe Mass on the delta formed by Rhine and Meuse rivers which directly lead to the centre of Europe, Rotterdam is one of the most vibrant multicultural cities in Europe which is renowned for its cultural life, architecture, maritime heritage and a striking riverside setting.Divided into a northern and southern part by the Nieuwe Maas which is connected through bridges, subway and railway tunnels, large parts of Rotterdam are in fact below sea level.
