The Reykjavík Capital Area consists of seven municipalities with approximately 200,000 inhabitants, comprising two-thirds of the Icelandic population.
The border between the countryside and the urban Reykjavík Capital Area is unusually clear when compared to other European cities. The inhabitants of these seven municipalities frequently live in one municipality and seek work or other activities in another. So, we refer to the Reykjavík Capital Area as one area where residents and visitors, domestic and foreign alike, interact without regards to political borders.
We encourage our visitors to venture out of Reykjavík city centre and experience the breadth of attractions the whole Reykjavík Capital Area has to offer. Excellent neighbourhood pools, amazing birdlife, the Presidential residence at Bessastadir, horse riding, hiking and golf, are just minutes away from Reykjavík city centre.
