Detail InformationEdit

In 1451 the Holy Johannes Capistran visited Eggenburg. The enthused citizens thereupon founded a Franciscan monastery in 1460. In 1466, the church was sanctified and decorated with a variety of works of art during the baroque period. In 1786 the monastery was disintegrated by the Emperor Josef II and thereafter converted into a calico factory. Due to a large fire in the city in the year 1808, destroying 203 houses, this building also turned into a ruin. Only in 1833 it was rebuilt by the Redemptorists. Among the many members of the preceptory one is outstanding: Frater Johann Baptist Stöger who has already been beatified. His bones rest in a high grave in the family chapel of the monastery’s church.
