Detail InformationEdit
Located on a spur at “Oberrothenbuch”, high above the Inn, there is a castle which was probably built at the time of the Staufer. Once, Ratzl Castle was the seat of the “Rohrer”, who were a very rich family at this time. This place is archeologically important because the remains of a castle from the 12th century are preserved here. A tower with an octagonal surface area is hard to find at the area of the northern Alps. The most important findings were dices made of bone and a gold-plated dragon (a piece of jewellery) made of bronze.
Bedsides the interesting historical remains, the area around the castle offers a beautiful view to the neighbouring Bavaria. Cyclists and hikers can rest at the octagonal table (the counterpart to the octagonal tower) and subsequently have a look at illustrated charts which show the history of the excavations.
The way to the castle (you can only get there by bike) is well marked. Coming from the “Weilhart country road”, you turn off at the first turning; you go right and then immediately left. On a road in the forest you get to the Medieval Castle after 100 m.
