Ranjit Sagar Dam, 17 km away from Pathankot city centre, is built across River Ravi for power generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. The dam a joint venture of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh is a symbol of interstate co-operation. Ranjit Sagar Dam is also known as Thein Dam. Ranjit Sagar Dam was completed in 2000 and generates 600 MW power. It is the highest earth filled dam in India. There is a municipal garden nearby and the tourists and locals use the dam site as a picnic spot. Families, especially children, would love to spend their evenings here. The surrounding hills and the Lake is an ideal spot for relaxation and also for bird watching during migratory period. Taxi : Ranjit Sagar Dam is easily accessible from Pathankot. For local transportation, auto rickshaws are available in plenty.
BUS : The main bus stand is the Maharana Pratap Terminus and this bus stand is well connected by buses from Jammu State Transport Corporation, Punjab State Transport Corporation, Haryana Roadways and the Himachal Transport Corporation. One can reach the city from Chandigarh by bus in six hours. Buses are the cheapest option and prices vary according to the service provider.
Train : Pathankot is a major railhead in the state and it has excellent connectivity to many places in the country. Pathankot has two stations and the main station is connected to Delhi (Dhauladhar Exp), Amritsar (Jat Bti Exp), Jammu (Tata Jat Exp) and others. Tickets from Delhi to Pathankot cost Rs 200 and this is the easiest option to reach the place. However this is an important transit point and most trains are always overbooked. Auto rickshaws are available from the station to the city center.
Air : Pathankot has a military airport that has a few scheduled commercial flights. One can reach Pathankot by air from places such as Delhi, Chandigarh and Kullu. However the frequency of the flights might not be good. Auto rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the airport to reach the city itself.
