Surrounded by mist-covered mountains from all sides, Quetzaltenango, also known as ‘Xela’ is the second largest city in the Republic of Guatemala. A convenient base for exploring the Western Highland region, Quetzaltenango is situated at an elevation of 7,655 feet above mean sea level. Spread over a 127 square kilometer area, Quetzaltenango, mostly inhabited by indigenous Quiche Mayan people, is extremely close to the dormant Santa Maria and the vulnerably active Santiaguito volcanoes.
A regional commercial capital of Guatemala, Quetzaltenango with trekking, hiking and camping sites is offering numerous other eco-tourism opportunities as well. The hot springs of ‘Fuentes Georginas’ located around tranquil awe-inspiring views of valleys below, is another favorite tourist attraction nearby Quetzaltenango. Largely an agrarian town providing harvests of wheat, coffee, fruits and vegetables alongside sheep and cattle breeding, Quetzaltenango is a hot favorite tourist attraction of Guatemala.
