Home to a large and thriving Afro-Caribbean community, Puerto Limon is simply called Limon, is the main Costa Rican hub on the Caribbean Sea for tourism and the cruise ships passing through the Panama Canal. Limon features a wide range of historic Caribbean buildings and numerous heritage structures including the 1889s First Baptists Church and the Black Star Line Building. Originally founded in 1854, Puerto Limon is also famed for its annual ‘Carnaval’ festival which offers music, food, parade, concert and dancing within the week around October 12th.
Containing a couple of port terminals which allow the shipments of Costa Rican exports like bananas, Limon provides a good choice of hotels, restaurants and bars for visitors suiting different tastes and budgets. Some of the other favorite tourist attractions located near Puerto Limon town include the Tortuguero Wildlife, the Veragua Rainforest Park, and the Reventizon River which features some beginning level rapids that are ideal for white water rafting.
