The birthplace of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, is located above the river Lubina. It was founded in the 13th century on the old merchants´ route leading from Moravia to Silesia. This period is reflected in the regular ground plan of the town with an oblong town square, in the remains of medieval fortifications and in the Gothic Church of the Birth of Our Lady.
The houses on the town square are built in the Renaissance style and are surrounded by original arcades from three sides. The Baroque left its traces on the facades of the houses, on the Marian column and, especially, in the work of Viennese architect G.P.Tencalla – on the building of the Early Baroque Piarist College. These days the former college houses the Regional Museum with exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Sigmund Freud. His birth house with a plaque is located in Zámečnická Street.
