Inaugurated in 1730 by the Portuguese Eucharistus Campos’ Puerto – Nuevo, Porto-Novo is the second largest city of Benin and has three names because of its various designations (Adjatchê, Hogbonou, and Porto – Novo). Porto-Novo is an important port on an inlet of the Gulf of Guinea, in the southeastern portion of the country.
The capital of Benin offers to tourists a very good assortment of museums, restaurants and charming markets with local products. Ethnographic Museum Senou Alexandre Adande is the first museum of the city and a top tourist attraction. Cultural objects, masks and musical instruments, coins, and tools oratories can be seen here. The palace Honme, The garden of the place Jean Bayol, The Songhai Center and The Museum da Silva are other prime attractions of Porto-Novo in Benin.
Other sites of interest include a Brazilian-style church, which is now a mosque, and the Institute of Higher Studies of Benin. The Stade Municipale and the Stade Charles de Gaulle are the largest football stadiums in the city.
