The Portland depository of Art is associate art depository in Portland, Maine. Supported because the Portland Society of Art in 1882, it’s placed within the downtown space called the humanities District, and is that the largest and oldest public art establishment within the U.S. State of American state.
Over future sixty five years, because the size and scope of the exhibitions dilated, the constraints of the Museum’s galleries, storage, and support areas became apparent. In 1976, American state native Charles Shipman Payson secure the depository his assortment of seventeen paintings by Homer. Recognizing the Museum’s physical limitations, he conjointly gave $8 million toward the building of associate addition to be designed by Henry Nichols Cobb of I. M. Ieoh Ming Pei & Partners. Construction began on the Charles Shipman Payson Building in 1981, and inside 2 years the $8.2 million facility was opened to the general public.
