Portage could be a town in and therefore the seat of Columbia County, Wisconsin, u. s.. town is an element of the Madison Metropolitan applied mathematics space. Portage was named for the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, a portage between the river and therefore the Wisconsin, that was recognized by Pere Jacques Marquette and Joliet throughout their discovery of a route to the river in 1673.
