Founded by the British in 1909, Port Sudan is well known amongst the tourists for its excellent beaches and scuba diving sites. En-route on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Port Sudan is a popular departure point for crossing the Red Sea to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Featuring a wealth of marine life and diving opportunities around amazing views in Shoaab Alromi, visitors can also witness live sharks in places like Sha’ab Rumi and Sanjaneb.
Connected through a rail and road link to Khartoum, Port Sudan is also served by the Port Sudan International Airport offering flights from Khartoum, Cairo and Dubai. Major Port Sudan imports include fuel oil, vehicles, and machinery and building materials, alongside exports of gum Arabic, oilseeds, cotton, sienna, hides and skins.
