Ponnani is a small town located along the coastal parts of the Malappuram District in the State of Kerala. The town is picturesque and is known for its long stretches of clean beaches. The place is one of the many tourist destinations in Kerala and it has been inhabited for many centuries. It is also located on the mouth of the River Barathapuza, which is the second largest river in the state. The place has an equal population of Muslims and Hindus and was under Muslim rule for a certain period. The Jama Masjid in Ponnani was built in 925 in the Hijrah Erah and is one of the most important sites of the region. The town was also referred to as the small Mecca, due to the large number of Islamic institutions. Home to many migratory birds, one can get a glimpse of many species of birds during the months of March to May in Ponnani. Twenty five different species of birds can be seen in the area. Biyyam Kayal has many water sports as well as other activities making the place favorable for spending some good time. Boat races can also be seen in the river.

HistoryEdit

Ponnani is the only port in Malappuram district and one of the oldest ports in Kerala. A tidal port at the mouth of Bharathapuzha, Ponnani is an important fishing centre. The town is connected by road from Kuttippuram railway station. National Highway-17 passes through this town, which is divided by the Canolly Canal, adding to its beauty.

By Air : The nearest airport is located at Kozhikode and for those who are arriving by air; the best option is to hire a taxi from the airport to the town. The airport is also well connected to many parts of the country. Taxis from the airport cost around Rs 1,000 for the trip.

By Train : The closest railway station is located at Kuttipuram, which is around 21 km from the town. Only a few trains stop at the station and traveling through trains might not be a good option. The Kozhikode railway station is located around 90 km away and if you are arriving by train, this is the best option. Arranging a taxi through the hotel is the best way to reach the place from the station.
