Pokhran is a desert city that is located in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Also known as the city of five mirages, the town of Pokhran is a popular tourist destination as well. These three havelis are must see locations in the town of Pokhran. You can also visit the Pokhran fort, which is yet another important tourist destination. This fort houses a large collection of costumes, pottery and weapons from the Rajput era. There are also cenotaphs that are intricately carved throughout the town.

Pokhran is a heritage city located in the Thar Desert, in the Jaisalmer District of Rajasthan. Bounded by five big salt rocks, Pokhran literally means ‘the place of five mirages’. The destination first came into the limelight when India carried out a series of nuclear tests here. On 18th May, 1974, Pokhran witnessed India’s first nuclear test , codenamed ‘Operation Smiling Buddha.’The place is noted for its havelis, monuments, and temples. One of the popular religious centres here is the Baba Ramdev Temple. It is situated 12 km away from Pokhran in the Ramdevera village. In the premises of the temple, there is the Samadhi of Ramdev Ji who was a Hindu folk God of Rajasthan. Devotees in large numbers visit this place every year during the popular Ramdevera Fair.Another popular tourist attraction of the destination is the Fort Pokaran, also known as ‘Balagarh’. It was constructed in the 14th century and belongs to the Chief of the Champawats. The beautiful architecture and the golden history related to the fort attract visitors from all across the globe. This fort also has a museum where travellers can see the attire, weapons, and pottery belonging to the Rajput period. The town is also renowned for its several beautiful and royal havelis. Some of the popular havelis that deserve a must-visit tag on the tourists’ itinerary are the Salim Singh-ki-Haveli, the Patwon Ji-ki-Haveli, and the Nathmalji-ki-Haveli.

By Air : Flights can be taken directly to the airport in Jodhpur, from where a bus can be caught to Pokran. Jodhpur has regular flight connectivity to Jaipur, Delhi and Mumbai, with local fares ranging around Rs 4000 to 6500.

By Train : The nearest railway station lies in the town of Jodhpur and the railway station in this city has frequent trains to many places including Agra, Udaipur, New Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Ahmedabad. Train fares will start from a minimum of Rs 120 to 150 for the basic class of travel. Air conditioned coaches will cost much more.

By Bus : Buses to the town of Pokran can be taken from the nearby major cities, which have regular buses to Pokran throughout the week. Bus fares from the cities of Bikaner, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur will range around Rs 160 to 250. Buses will be available in both air conditioned and non air conditioned varieties. You can opt for buses for short distance travel purposes.
