Phek is a town that is situated in the Phek district of the state of Nagaland. The town is located along the border regions of the country of Myanmar. The town has a rich cultural heritage and many festivals are celebrated in the place throughout the year. The people of the Phek region are cheerful and are known for their warm hospitality. One can see many colorful types of attire during the different festivals and visiting during one of the festivals is a good option. Some of the main festivals that are celebrated in the region are Khuthonye, Thurinye, Turhinye, Ngunye, Tukhanye, Sukhrunye and Tukhanye. The Ngunye festival takes in the month of February and during this time one can see people from different areas wearing their traditional costumes and engaging in singing and dancing. One can also see natural fields of orchids that grow extensively in the region. The Shilloi Lake is the main attraction and this is being developed as a main center for tourists in the place. There are many places of natural beauty that surround the town and some of them are popular picnic spots. One can also purchase some of the local weaving products that are made in the town.

HistoryEdit

A town council, Phek occupies southeastern portion of Nagaland. Bordered by Zunheboto in north, Kohima in west, Myanmar in east and Manipur in south, the district was carved out from Kohima in 1973. The city acquired its name from the word “Phekrekedze” which means a watch tower. Like other cities of Nagaland, this too is inhabited by tribal population, with Pochurys and Chakhesangs forming the majority. More than 70% of the land at Phek is covered with evergreen forests. There are numerous mountains, Zanibu being the highest one (8000 feet). Cris crossed by rivers like Sedzu, Tizu, Lanye, this picturesque place is a destination worth visiting. There is a plethora of flora and fauna tat is known to exist here.

How to ReachEdit

By Air : Travelers, who are planning to reach the place by air, have the option of taking a flight to the Dimapur Airport and hiring a taxi from there to the town of Phek. The airport is reasonably well connected and receives flights from places such as Guwahati, Kolkata, Imphal and Dibrugarh. This is the only reasonable option for air travelers. Taxis can be hired from outside the airport and they cost around Rs 7 per kilometer.

By Train : Phek does not have its own railway station and the nearest well connected railhead is at Guwahati, which is around 280 km from Phek. Tourists have the option of taking a bus or taxi to Phek from Guwahati.

By Bus : State run buses are available from some of the nearby towns and these are a cheaper option. However they cannot be relied upon and buses are often crowded.
