HistoryEdit

Origin of the name Patnitop is a distortion of the original name of Patan Da Talab meaning Pond of the Princess. In olden times a pond existed in the meadows and the kings princess often used to have her bath there. Part of the pond still exists near the youth hostel. It may be that the British had difficulties recording an English spelling of an Indian name correctly in their revenue records. Over the years the name changed from Patan Da Talab to Patnitop.

By Air : There is no airpoet in Patnitop. Srinagar, which is around 200 km from Patnitop has the nearest airport and is well connected to various cities.

By Train : Jammu Tawi around 101 km from Patnitop has the nearest railway station. Jammu Tawi is connected to all major cities in India like Delh, Kolkata , Mumbai , Chennai and even to the the southern most Trivandrum Railway station.

By BUS : Buses to the town of Patnitop can be taken from Pathankot, Jammu and Srinagar. These are the three major places in the state with a huge network of buses, and Patnitop can be reached from here. The journey from Jammu to Patnitop will take around three hours in an average, and bus fares will range around Rs 100 to 150.

By Taxi : Taxis are available from Jammu, Katra, Udhampur. taxi it takes about 3 and a half hours to reach Patnitop.

By Other : Auto rickshaws are easily available for moving about in the city.

Patnitop Snow Festival ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  January ; Details:  A thre-day Snow Festival organised by J and K Tourism Department in collaboration with Patnitop Development Authority (PDA) concluded at concluded at Patnitop a famous tourist destination about 112 Km away from Jammu on Monday. On the occasion Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Anil Magotra was the Chief Guest and he distributed prizes among the winners. During the three-day event various winter sports activities and cultural programmes depicting traditional folk culture of the state were organized in the main meadow of Patnitop. The sports activities and cultural items were so forceful that compelled everybody present on the occasion to give repeated cheers.The skiing completion in which participants within and outside the different parts of the state attracts a large crowd on the occasion.
