Detail InformationEdit

The Paseo de la Republica, also known as Expressway or Zanjón, is one of the main avenues of the city of Lima, capital of Peru, being an icon of the city and ultimate reference point of it. It stretches across 66 blocks walking from north to south, the districts of downtown Lima, Lince, La Victoria, San Isidro, Surquillo, Miraflores and Barranco. Also in the central part of the ditch is located Corridor Metropolitan Transportation System. In 1858, President Ramón Castilla ordered the laying of a railway line that would link the city of Lima to Chorrillos spa, a favorite of high society during the nineteenth century Lima. Then, in 1868 when President José Balta ordered the demolition of the city walls, the railroad served as a pattern for laying a road. With the construction of Exposition Park, adjacent to this road, provided for the construction of the avenue that would take the name of Paseo de la República. The Paseo de la República was, at the time, the widest avenue in the city of Lima and served as a framework for projecting the working class district of La Victoria that the same José Balta built. Subsequently, following the process of the city conurbation experienced during the first decades of the twentieth century, the Paseo de la República was joining successive districts. In 2006, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima began the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit, known as the The Metropolitan (the central platform of replacing the separate platform that currently exist). There are 12 stations in this service on the Expressway. This stretch of the Metropolitan opened on July 28, 2010.
