Affectionately called Par’bo, Paramaribo is the capital and the largest city in Suriname located along the banks of the Suriname River. The historic Paramaribo Inner City tourist attraction has also been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Originally founded as a Dutch trading post around 1630, Paramaribo first became the capital of the new English Colony in 1650. Approximately 15 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean, Paramaribo features a tropical rainforest climate without any true dry season.
Home to over 250,000 people from a diverse ethnic makeup including Creoles, Hindustani, Javanese, East Indians, Portuguese, Native Americans, Chinese and Europeans, the majority of Paramaribo residents speak Sranantongo, although Dutch is the official language. Served by the Paramaribo-Zanderij International Airport, Paramaribo is conveniently accessible through direct scheduled flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Miami, New York and Brazil.
