There is some confusion concerning the village name. Residents say the $64000 name is Panniqtuuq, which implies “the place of the many bull caribou”.Early in 2005 residents voted against formally ever-changing the name of the village to the first native one, as Pangnirtung has achieved a world reputation for producing high-quality traditional arts, similarly as art and weaving.
