The Palamu district is a thinly populated part of the state of Jharkhand. The place is known for the Palamu National Park and the park is home to a small population of tigers. Some of the other animals that can be seen in the park are chintal, nilgai, Indian dogs, chinkara, langurs, gaur, hares, elephants, porcupines, leopards, wild boars, sloth bears and sambar deer. Some birds such as peafowl, partridges and jungle fowl can be seen here as well. One can drive through the park using jeeps that can be hired from the forest department. Forest guides are also provided and they can take safely take you to see the animals in the park. There are a few tree houses that are located here as well and these are used for watching and spotting various animals. Food is also provided on request. There are a few watch towers present in the park and these are good vantage points from where you can watch the animals safely. Palamu also has two forts that are situated inside the jungles and these are also popular tourist sites. They are known as the Naya Kila and the Purana Kila. The walls of these forts still bear cannon and bullet marks.

Palamau is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state. Two large forts are located deep in the forests of Aurangabad on Sher Shah Suri path near Daltonganj. These forts were attributed to the Vanvasi kings of the Chero dynasty. It had defenses in three directions and three main gates. Fort was constructed by Raja Medini Ray. The architecture is very Islamic which bespeaks of Daud Khan’s conquest.

By Air : The closest airport is located at the city of Ranchi. This is situated at a distance of 171 kilometers from the town and there are flights arriving from places such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. If you are arriving from an international destination, you can opt for a connecting flight from any of these cities to Ranchi. Taxis are the popular mode of transport from the airport to the national park. They are plentiful and can be hired from outside the station. They cost Rs 7 per kilometer for the trip.
