The main occupations of the 1700 inhabitants of Paamiut and the only settlement Arsuk, is fishing and the great importance of the sea for the town, with the many sea eagles, is also underlined by the fact that Greenland’s maritime training takes place in Paamiut.
Archaeological finds indicate that the area has been inhabited at different times since 1500 B.C. The town’s name means “they who reside by the mouth” and was founded in 1742, at the mouth of the Kuannersooq fjord. Paamiut’s old town is an idyllic area with its picturesque buildings. Here you can see, for example, the old shop, the colonial administration building, a goat barn and the church.
Population: 1589 in the town and 144 inhabitants living in the area’s only settlement
The locals willingly take visitors on tours through the millennial old nature trails that go from the town and into the country. The trails are up to 50 km long.
You can fly to Paamiut with Air Greenland via the airport in Nuuk. During the summertime you have the option to reach Paamiut via the international airport in Narsarsuaq, where both Air Greenland and Air Iceland operate. Arctic Umiaq Line’s passenger ship, which sails along the west coast from Qaqortoq in the south to Ilulissat in the north, also regularly calls at Paamiut.
The area is ideal for walking – for both long and short hikes. You can go on fishing trips and excursions by boat. In winter, cars are supplemented with skis and snowmobiles.
You can stay overnight at a hotel, privately or put up a tent in the mountains or where the countryside and view pleases you the most.
