The Ottendorfer library and Stuyvesant Polyclinic Hospital square measure 2 conterminous historic buildings situated at one hundred thirty five and 137 ordinal Avenue within the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, big apple town. The buildings were in-built 1883-84 and were designed as a try by German-born designer William Schickel. They were a present to town of latest York by philanthropists Lee Harvey Oswald Ottendorfer, a German migrator and publisher of the Staats-Zeitung, the city’s largest German-language newspaper, and his partner Pakistani monetary unit Ottendorfer.
The Ottendorfer Library was the second branch of the big apple Free depository library, and is presently the oldest library within the town to occupy its original building. It opened on Gregorian calendar month seven, 1884. Even before the library opened, the Ottendorfers had given their own assortment of books to the NYFL.
The Stuyvesant Clinic was connected with the German Hospital uptown – currently Lenox Hill Hospital – and was originally referred to as the “German Dispensary”, a reputation that was born with the anti-German sentiment of war I. It provided free treatment to German immigrants on the Lower side, on the model of the Northern clinic in Village. The building options earthenware busts of medical practitioner, astronomer, Alexander von Humboldt and Lavoisier, among others. The building was remodeled in 2009 by David Mayerfied.
The Stuyvesant Polyclinic building was selected a brand new York town landmark in 1976, and also the Ottendorfer Library in 1977, with its interior being selected in 1981. Each buildings were adscititious to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
