The town has a rich history and was ruled by both the Satavahanas and the Mauryas. Inscriptions from the Satavahanas period can be seen in the village called China Ganjam that is located near the town of Ongole. The Kakatiya Dynasty also ruled the region for a period of time. Voda Revu and Motupalli were port towns that were located in the region during the rule of the Satavanahas. Ongole has been mentioned in many inscriptions that date back to the time of the Pallavas during the 3rd and 4th century. The inscriptions refer to Ongole as a thriving and busy city that was the threshold of culture and had a kaleidoscopic range. Ongole has an excellent railway station that has been constructed in a modern style. There are a few ashrams that are located in the city and many people flock to the Achalananda Ashram every year to receive the blessings of the Swami who is considered to be powerful. The district is also known for its tobacco products. Summers are hot and temperatures rise steadily from March. March to June is generally considered the summer season. Temperatures during the summer season range from a minimum of 32°C and rise up to a maximum of 38°C. Humidity is also extremely high during the summer season due to the close proximity of the Bay of Bengal.
