The heritage of the recent Protestant Meeting House in Alexandria, Virginia dates from the first eighteenth century. Scottish Presbyterians were among the first European settlers of Northern Virginia and were concerned in establishing Alexandria as a port in 1749. The Society of Presbyterians worshiped publically within the town from the decade, and therefore the congregation’s 1st put in minister arrived in 1772. The Meeting House was erected in 1775. For the most part destroyed by fireplace in 1835, it had been later restored, maintaining a Reformed Protestant plain-style look. Apart from a tower supplementary in 1843 and granite entrance stairs put in in 1853, it remains very little altered to the current day.Alexandrians have gathered at the Meeting House for public worship repeatedly over the years. Among alternative such services that President of the United States attended here was one conducted by the Rev. Dr. James naturalist for the National Day of Solemn Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer in 1798. The bell tolled in mourning throughout the four days between his death and burial.The Meeting House remained open for worship throughout the warfare, however the congregation dwindled later.
