Detail InformationEdit

“Said to have been designed by John George Knight, architect and built under the supervision of Gilbert Rothdale McMinn, senior surveyor and supervisor of works, the Old Court House and Police Station buildings in Darwin was erected in 1884 as the first courthouse, cellblock, and police station within the Northern Territory.
In 1942 these buildings were occupied by the Royal Australian Navy as headquarters and continued to be used by the navy as HMAS Melville until their partial destruction by Cyclone Tracy in December, 1974. These reconstructed buildings were officially reopened by the Chief Minister Hon. Paul Everingham on December 24th, 1981, and were subsequently used as offices for the present administrator of the Northern Territory Commodore E. E. Johnston A. M., O. B. E., C. St. J. and his successors.”
