Old hall, conjointly called the Southern Market, could be a historic advanced of conterminous buildings in Mobile, Alabama, that presently homes the depository of Mobile. The advanced was designed from 1855 to 1857 to function a hall and as a marketplace. It had been declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The advanced is Italianate vogue in style and contains four rectangular sections connected by 3 arcaded passageways. The grouping is 244 feet (74 m) wide on Royal Street, 275 feet (84 m) long on Church Street, and also the back is 213 feet (65 m) wide on Water Street. The building is stucco over brick construction with wood trim and brackets.
Beginning in 1997 the building was restored to accommodate the depository of Mobile. AN addition was additional to the rear of the building in 2000 to accommodate the depository of Mobile’s permanent exhibits and workers offices. The depository was closed for repairs for many months following flood injury from cyclone Katrina in 2005.
The exhibits cowl 2 giant floors of the advanced and chronicle three hundred years of Mobile history. The depository usually includes a six month long featured exhibit, special collections exhibits that area unit turned sporadically, and several other permanent exhibits. The permanent exhibits include: the recent ways in which New Days exhibit that explores Mobile’s history from organization to the present; the Walls and Halls exhibit that includes article of furniture, antique silver, artwork, and different artifacts; and also the Discovery area Interactive Gallery for youngsters.
