A treasured regional cultural center situated on the Danube River, Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia. Facing the northern slopes of Fruska Gora Mountain, Novi Sad is located in between Budapest and Belgrade. Home to over 400,000 inhabitants now, Novi Sad City was originally founded in 1694. Composed of Serbs, Hungarians and Germans, Novi Sad has well maintained its multi-cultural identity even today. Nicknamed as the ‘Serbian Athens’, it is a major industrial and financial centre of the Serbian economy.
Sprawled over a 699 square kilometer area, Novi Sad is a typical Central European city dominated by a grand architecture from the 19th century. However, the old small houses from the past are now being replaced by numerous modern multi-storey buildings rearranging the city skyline. An important destination on the Summer Festival map of Europe, Novi Sad also has a tourist port attracting various river cruise vessels across Europe traveling along the waters of the Danube River.
