Detail InformationEdit

The Northern Cape High Court, Kimberley (formerly the Northern Cape Provincial Division and commonly the Kimberley High Court) is one of the High Courts of South Africa. It is located in Kimberley and has general jurisdiction over the Northern Cape province, except for certain areas transferred from the North West province in 2006 that presently remain under the jurisdiction of the North West High Court.
A Supreme Court was created for the British colony of Griqualand West by proclamation in 1871. In 1880 Griqualand West was annexed by the Cape Colony, and the court was subordinated to the Cape Supreme Court and became known as the High Court of Griqualand West. On the creation of the Union of South Africa it became the Griqualand West Local Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa and remained subordinate to the Cape Provincial Division. In 1969 it became a provincial division in its own right as the Northern Cape Provincial Division. When the 1996 Constitution came into force it became a division of the High Court of South Africa. In 2003 its area of jurisdiction was adjusted to cover the whole of the Northern Cape province, and in 2009 it was renamed to its current name.
