Commonly known as the ‘Rock of Polynesia’, Niue became the first Wi-Fi nation in 2003 by providing free wireless internet access throughout the country. One of the smallest countries with the largest raised coral atoll in the World, Niue is an island country located between the Tonga and Cook islands in the South Pacific Ocean. Spread over a meager 260 square kilometer area, Niue is a self-governing country in free association with New Zealand. Roughly oval in shape with an 18 kilometer diameter, Niue terrain largely consists of steep limestone cliffs by the coastline peppered with caves, hidden caverns and chasms along with a raised central plateau.
Subsistence agriculture and fisheries alongside tourism form the trinity of the Niue economy which has at times benefitted from grants received from New Zealand in the past. Served by the Hanan International Airport offering regular scheduled flights from New Zealand, Niue is however inaccessible by boats from foreign ports. Nevertheless, outside of the cyclone season you can choose to sail on your own yacht and come to Niue Island.
