Nishinoomote is a city located in Kagoshima, Japan on the island of Tanegashima. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 17,666and the density of 85.9persons perSquare kilometer. The total area is 205.75Square kilometers. The city was founded on 1 October 1958. It has been twinned with Vila do Bispo, Portugal since 1 October 1993 in recognition of the fact that it was Fernão Mendes Pinto a Portuguese who claimed to be the first European to set foot on Japan and did so on Tanegashima in 1543.
