Neyyar dam is located 32 kms from the capital of Kerala. Built in 1958, the dam is a popular picnic spot, built on the basin where the three rivers Neyyar, Mullayar, and Kallar meet. The area is also rich in herbs which are used for making several medicines. A wild life sanctuary established to preserve wild life is also in the vicinity, along with a crocodile farm and Lion & deer safari parks. There is also a crocodile farm and a watchtower in the region with an entry fee of Rs 5 for Indians, Rs 10 for Foreigners. The dam is easily approachable as regular bus services are available from Kochi. It is recommended that rather than taking a safari in which the big cats are rarely spotted, one can go on a guided trek which would cost around Rs 400 – 800 for a group of 10 people. An elephant rehabilitation center located 7 km up the road is place where you can go on a 30 min ride for around Rs 100.

HistoryEdit

Neyyar Dam is constructed in the year 1958. It was made at the confluence of the Neyyar River, Kallar River and Mullayar River. This place is popular as a picnic spot and family outings. The area nearby houses many ingenious species of flora and fauna. A wildlife sanctuary is set up to conserve them. Go for a safari ride in the lion and deer parks and see the animals in their natural habitat. It also has a crocodile farm where you can see many of these reptiles basking under the sun. You can also visit the watchtower nearby to take delight in the scenic environment by paying a minimal entry fees. You can go for elephant rides in the elephant rehabilitation centre which is 7 km away.

Air : Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, about 38 km.

Others : Auto rickshaws is also available to reach this place in trivandrum. Auto rickshaws in Trivandrum do not run on meter; however the charges are very minimal when compared to the other cities in Kerala. While travelling through an auto rickshaw, do not discuss the rate when you reach your destination. Negotiate a rate before getting into an auto rickshaw, as fares will rarely exceed Rs 70. There are no night fares and autos are a safe mode of travel. You can also rent out a two wheeler for around Rs 350 to 500 a day and the deposit will cost you around Rs 1500 per day.
